Hydration and Health: A Mid-Air Reflection

As I write this, I’m somewhere over the Middle East, crammed into an airplane seat, typing away on my barely hanging on for life phone. I’m flying home to England, and honestly, it’s been a whirlwind of a week. This morning, I was packing my bags and double-checking travel essentials (like, do I really need Ten pairs of socks for a 3-week trip?), all while still recovering from yesterday’s colonoscopy—or was it an endoscopy? The doctors kept switching terms, and Google tells me it was definitely a colonoscopy, so we’ll go with that.

The results? Not exactly what I hoped for. Let’s just say they weren’t shouting, “You’re thriving!” from the rooftops. But here’s the thing—I’ve been through this before, and I’ll get through it again. Yes, it’s frustrating, and yes, I feel a little angry at my body (which I’m working on, somehow). But I’m also grateful to have answers, even if a part of me knew the truth all along and was just living in denial.

Physically, I’m drained—like, “should I just curl up in this airplane seat and nap for three hours?” drained. But mentally, I’m determined. I’m on steroids for the next 10 weeks, and my focus is simple: rebuilding my health, starting with hydration.

Why Hydration Is My Focus Right Now

Here’s the thing about hydration: it’s such a small habit, but it makes a massive difference. When I drink enough water, my migraines ease up, my skin glows (like I just walked out of a fancy spa), and I feel like I can tackle the world—or at least my to-do list.

Now that I’m on steroids, hydration feels even more critical. My body needs all the support it can get, and honestly, staying hydrated feels like the easiest win in a long list of health challenges. Except, of course, when I forget to drink altogether.

Hydration Struggles and Small Wins

If I’m being honest, hydration hasn’t always been my strong suit. I get so hyper-focused on tasks that I forget to listen to my body. And let’s face it, plain water can be boring. But I’m learning to make it fun:

               •             Motivational Water Bottles: I love seeing the little time markers and feeling that rush of accomplishment when I finish a bottle. Except… I forgot to pack mine for this trip. Rookie mistake. But it’s okay—I think I still have one at home in England!

               •             Flavor Boosts: A splash of lemon or cucumber in my water makes it feel fancy (like I’m at a spa, minus the robe).

               •             Herbal Teas: Honestly, I’ve always been a tea lover, but now I’m using it as an excuse to stay hydrated. Bonus points if it has added benefits.

My biggest win? Learning to celebrate the small stuff. Even something as simple as finishing my water bottle or swapping soda for squash feels like progress.

Staying Hydrated While Traveling

Traveling is its own hydration challenge. Airplane air is dry, the cups of water are tiny, and let’s not even talk about the bathroom situation. But I’m determined to stay on track. My plan? Stock up on squash when I get to England (because let’s be honest, the UK has the best flavours), drink a glass of water every time I sit down, and research jet lag hacks while I’m flying.

This Week’s Wins

As im writing this is Wednesday evening—or is it Thursday morning? Who knows anymore? Either way, I’m claiming Wednesday as a win. Here’s why:

  • I survived the colonoscopy. Enough said.
  •  I refueled with a hearty beef stew post-procedure. Comfort food for the win.
  • I woke up, packed my bags, and didn’t miss my flight. (Small miracle.)
  • My dear friend drove me all the way from Busan to Incheon Airport because they didn’t want me to struggle more than I already was. I mean, who deserves friends like that? My heart!

What’s Next?

For the next 10 weeks, my focus is progress over perfection. Small steps like staying hydrated, getting better sleep (fingers crossed the jet lag isn’t too brutal), and eating more whole foods are my priorities.

I’ve learned that small changes can lead to big impacts, even if it takes time. When I stay hydrated, I feel more awake, less achy, and a little more like myself. That’s the goal: one small win at a time.

Your Turn: Let’s Talk Self-Care

What’s one small act of self-care you’re focusing on this week? For me, it’s hydration. How about you?

Need ideas? Here are a few:

  •   Physical: Take a 10-minute walk or stretch before bed.
  •  Mental: Spend 5 minutes journaling or meditating.
  •  Health: Prep a healthy snack or drink an extra glass of water.
  • Simple Wins: Tidy a small space or get to bed earlier.

Let me know in the comments or send me a message—I’d love to hear about your wins!

Here’s to progress, hydration, and one small step at a time.
